AJK President Calls on U.S. to Mediate in Kashmir Conflict for Regional Peace
AJK President Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry meets U.S. Embassy's Zachary Herkenrider to discuss Kashmir resolution and regional peace.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) President Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry met with U.S. Embassy Political Counselor Zachary Herkenrider in Islamabad on Thursday, urging the United States to take an active role in resolving the Kashmir dispute. The meeting focused on fostering peace and stability across South Asia, with Chaudhry highlighting the critical need for international intervention.

During the discussion, Chaudhry provided an in-depth overview of the ongoing situation in Indian-administered Kashmir, drawing attention to alleged human rights abuses. He asserted that India’s control over the region contradicts the desires and aspirations of the Kashmiri people, labeling it a forced occupation. “A just resolution to the Kashmir issue is essential for lasting peace in South Asia,” he emphasized, underscoring the region’s geopolitical significance.

Chaudhry also warned of the risks of escalation between India and Pakistan, noting that any conflict could spiral into a broader, potentially nuclear, confrontation. He advocated for a permanent ceasefire to mitigate this threat, stressing the urgency of diplomatic efforts. The AJK president praised U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent offer to mediate and commended Senator Marco Rubio’s support for the Kashmiri self-determination movement.

He urged the U.S. to back the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination, aligning with United Nations resolutions. This call to action positions the U.S. as a potential key player in de-escalating tensions and addressing one of South Asia’s longest-standing disputes.
