Alcohol Promotion a State backed Phenomenon ‘Ban Liquor or Face Agitation’: DAK

Srinagar: President Doctors Association of Kashmir Dr Nisar-ul-Hassan castigated Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather for his remarks that the manufacture, sale and consumption of alcohol cannot be banned in Jammu and Kashmir.

In a statement to CNS he said that this is shocking to know that the sale of alcohol bottles has increased to 520 lacs bottles in 2012 as against 30.51 lacs in 2011.Government is delibrately supporting the sale of alcohol for revenue generation and are promoting social evils in the society. Rather’s statement is safe to conclude that alcohol promotion is a state backed phenomenon/conspiracy to destroy our social fabric and cultural traditions.

“Mr Rather is legalizing a poison. Alcohol destroys individuals and societies.Alcohol kills and invites social evils in the society. It is not a remedy but a disease. It causes neurological disorders, heart attacks, gastrointestinal bleeds, pancreatic disease, cirrhosis and cancer of mouth, esophagus, stomach and liver.State is duty bound to uphold its own constitution wherein under article 47 state shall endeavour to bring about prohibition of use and trade of alcohol .State has moral and legal obligation to ban the trade of alcohol. If alcohol is banned in Gujrat and many other states, why not in J&K?”

“We as conscious nation have a responsibility to cleanse the society from social evils and safeguard our social fabric.

DAK is commited to fight against the use and trade of alcohol in the state. We will in no case allow state to promote this menace on this sacred soil. We warn state of dire consequences if liqor is not banned. We appeal all religiuos clerics to sensitise nation and prepare them for a state wide agitation against this menace,” he said.
