In a significant development, an Indian Border Security Force (BSF) soldier, Purnam Kumar Shaw, who was detained by Pakistan Rangers on April 23 after unintentionally crossing the International Border, has been returned to India. The handover took place today, May 15, 2025, at approximately 10:30 AM through the Joint Check Post at Attari, Amritsar, following diplomatic efforts between the two nations.

Shaw, a member of the BSF’s 73rd battalion, was on operational duty near the Ferozepur sector in Punjab when the incident occurred. The 40-year-old, hailing from Rishra in West Bengal’s Hooghly district, inadvertently crossed into Pakistani territory around 11:50 AM on April 23, a day after the tragic Pahalgam terror attack that heightened tensions along the border. He was immediately apprehended by Pakistani Rangers and held for questioning.

The BSF confirmed that Shaw’s repatriation was made possible through persistent negotiations, including regular flag meetings with Pakistan Rangers and other communication channels. The process was carried out smoothly, adhering to established border protocols. Upon his return, Shaw is undergoing a debriefing to assess his condition and the circumstances of his detention.

This exchange comes amid a fragile ceasefire between India and Pakistan, following a period of escalated conflict triggered by the Pahalgam attack. The safe return of Shaw has been met with relief, with local leaders and officials expressing gratitude for the diplomatic efforts that secured his release. His family, who had been anxiously awaiting news, is expected to reunite with him soon.
