Geelani placed under house arrest

Srinagar: Hours after Huriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani arrived in Valley from New Delhi on Wednesday; authorities reportedly placed him under the house arrest.

According to the reports received by KNS, Geelani was kept under house arrest on Wednesday evening with the police personnel being deployed outside the gate of his residence at Hyderpora. Huriyat (G) chief spokesman Ayaz Akbar told KNS over phone that the senior separatist leader has been informed about his house detention during late Wednesday hours.

Akbar while condemning the police action stated that Geelani was scheduled to hold anti-election rallies in every district of the valley and that all the arrangements for the same were made. Also, he said, the district offices of Huriyat (G) were informed about the scheduled rallies. Pertinently, Geelani arrived here from New Delhi on Wednesday.

Geelani was received by his supporters. A considerable number of people followed the vehicle of Geelani from the Srinagar Airport, raising pro-freedom and anti-India slogans. As he reached his Hyderpora residence, Geelani was welcomed by slogans and cheers by his followers who were waiting for him and distributed anti-election posters among people. Geelani had gone to Delhi for treatment after illness on March 13. (KNS)
