SMC launches massive sanitation drive in Brari Nambal

Srinagar: Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) launched a massive sanitation drive in and around the Brari Nambal Lagoon. The drive which started since yesterday morning  involved around 250 SMC workers, including sweepers and other officials, to clear up the debris to restore the land to its old glory.

According to a statement issued to KNS, earlier SMC removed 100 encroachments/shanties and evacuated 500 rag-pickers illegally occupying a huge patch of the lagoon land measuring more than sixty kanals. These illegal encroachments and the occupants were posing a grave threat to the lagoon.

A huge quantity of solid waste lying on periphery of said land has  been removed during the drive  accessible to men and machinery and has been dumped at landfill site Achan.SMC has also requested LAWDA authorities to assist in removing other dry material which is not accessible through land and needs dredging with the machine available with LAWDA.

The daylong drive was overseen by SMC commissioner Dr G N Qasba. The drive was also monitored by Chief Encroachment Officer Nissar Ahmad Shah and Chief Sanitation Officer Manzoor Ahmad Tarray including all the sanitation officers. (KNS)
