Stone pelting cases against 9730 persons pertaining to 9 years withdrawn: Govt

Jammu: The state government on Thursday said that 1745 cases, pertaining to 2008-17, have been withdrawn against 9730 persons on the basis of recommendations by committee constituted for the purpose.

“The Government on the basis of the recommendations of the Committee constituted vide Government Order No. 25-Home of 2016 dated 20-06-2016 read with Government Order No. 1673-Home of 2017 dated 23-11-2017, approved withdrawal of 1745 cases, pertain to the years 2008-17, involving 9730 persons subject to furnishing of an undertaking by the parents or guardians, to the effect that the accused indulge in any unlawful activity in future and will exhibit good behaviour,” said Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who is also State’s Home minister, in a written reply to question by MLA Er RAshid.

As regards the details of the particulars of the persons, Mehbboba said it would not be desirable to disclose the names for the security of these persons.

To other question whether government it intends to grant amnesty to political or jailed militants, Mehbboba gave an oblique answer.

“The prisoners are categorized as convicts, under trial and detenues whose custody is regulated in

accordance with the extant legal provisions. Further, the Government reviews, from time to time, the cases of preventive detentions in terms of the provisions of J&K Public Safety Act and on the basis of overall assessment in each case, a decision is taken in regard to release of a detenue,” she said.
