Geelani under house arrest, was stopped to offer Friday prayers: Hurriyat (G)

Srinagar: Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Geelani is continuously under house arrest and today the strength of police force were increased and he was forcibly stopped from offering the Friday prayers.

According to a statement issued to KNS, while terming these actions of the administration as state terrorism and the interference into the religious affairs, Hurriyat Conference has strongly condemned this. In a statement issued to KNS, Hurriyat spokesman Ayaz Akbar said that today on 13th June, Geelani were 9th time denied his religious right and from 16 April when he returned from New Delhi, he was never given any chance to offer prayers in the Masjid. He expressed his surprise that the Omer led government is maintaining absolute silence over the continuous house detention of Geelani and no reason is being provided that why and for what crime has been Geelani imprisoned. Till now neither has state administration given any information about this house detention nor have police mentioned any act or section of the law under which Geelani is being imprisoned.

The spokesman said that Hurriyat Conference also approached High Court in 2010 with this respect but neither his freedom was restored nor was he given any kind of relaxation nor has they given any legal justification of his detention. He said that justice delayed is equal to the justice denied and Geelani has become the victim of this injustice. Hurriyat Spokesman said that the government in New Delhi has changed and BJP came into power but it is still unknown that weather the house detention of Geelani will be ended or the traditions are kept alive.

While demanding immediate release of Geelani, Hurriyat Spokesman said that the government’s claim has been proven baseless on November 2013 that the freedom and political activities of the pro-freedom leader are threat to the law and order. During the few days of his release, Geelani organized 5 mega gatherings in which although lakhs of people participated but these gatherings remained very much peaceful, neither any type of peace was disturbed nor any order was violated. Hurriyat Conference appeals Amnesty International and local non-government human rights organizations to take serious notice of the illegal house detention of the pro-freedom leader and use their influence for his release.
