Substandard food being supplied to Anganwari centres

DFCO seizes food articles worth Rs 2000000 from Anganwari centres

Srinagar: The Drug and Food Control Organisation (DFCO) has found subs standard mustard oil, turmeric and skimmed milk being provided to the Anganwari centres in Kashmir.

According to Nazir Ahmad Wani, deputy controller of the department in order to ensure that only wholesome and quality food is provided by Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) centres of Kashmir Division, the department of DFCO Kashmir had lifted 339 samples of food articles from various ICDS centers (Anganwari centres) during last financial year, out of which Four samples have been declared as Substandard which includes Mustard Oil, Turmeric powder (2 samples) and Skimmed milk.  The samples were mainly lifted in Pulwama and Ganderbal districts.

He said the above food articles worth Rs 20 Lacs have been seized from various ICDS centres by the department. The designated officers of the concerned Districts, after completing the investigation have filed charge sheets before Adjudicating officers of concerned districts  out of which two cases  have been decided imposing a fine of Rs Two  Lac eighteen  thousand.

Moreover the department has started special drive and accordingly all the Designated officers of Kashmir Division have been asked to have thorough inspection of ICDS centres and lift the samples of various food articles available with the centres so that only quality and safe food items are available with them. Moreover the Designated officers of Kashmir Division have also been directed to keep strict vigil over the quality of MID-Days meals provided to school children. The public in general has been requested that incase of any doubt with regard to any food article, the complaint may be lodged on the help line number 0194-2495191 of the Department.
