Juniors alleged ragging in SP College

Srinagar: Senior students in the hostel in Sri Pratap College campus Srinagar allegedly ragged a group of students. Junior students from Drass and Gurez were thrashed, paraded and later humiliated by some of the senior students. They protested against College administration and said that there is no hostel warden in the campus.

Some students told CNS that they were ragged because there is no warden in the hostel. “How come College authorities allowed these students to rag us when it is a crime and banned by the Supreme Court of India,” a student from Gurez said.

College sources told CNS that there is an officiating warden in the college who leaves the college at 4 pm on regular basis.

Principal SP College, Professor Muhammad Yaseen told CNS that it was not ragging but some senior students wanted to have an introduction of the junior students. “The matter has been resolved and I think they are friends now,” he said.

The Principal further said that government is in the process of creating a Warden post for the college and hopefully the college will have a Warden in near future. “A professor is acting as officiating Warden and he is performing his duty in letter and spirit,” he said.

Pertinently, the Supreme Court of India has banned the ragging in the educational institutions and has described it a disorderly conduct, whether by words spoken or written, or by an act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness any student, indulging in rowdy or indisciplined activities which cause or are likely to cause annoyance, hardship or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension thereof in a fresher or a junior student and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the psyche of a fresher or a junior student.” (CNS)
